Pergola screens are retractable mesh panels that mount into the pergola's own posts and beams, closing off the sides without blocking the view when they're not needed. Pair them with our louvered aluminum roof and one remote runs both the louvres and the screens, turning the structure into a three-season outdoor room.

Louvered pergola with retractable screens
A louvered pergola with retractable screens pairs our aluminum louvered roof with mesh screens that drop or slide along the inside of the posts and beams. The screens live in a channel built into the aluminum frame, so there's no separate track system bolted on afterward – the screen housing is part of the post itself. When they're open, you see the louvres and the posts, not a screen box. When they're closed, the mesh runs top to bottom, sealing the gap between post and beam.
We offer three mesh types on the sides: insect mesh that keeps out mosquitoes and flies while still letting air through, privacy mesh with a tighter weave that blocks sightlines from a neighbour's yard or the street, and solar mesh that cuts glare and heat gain on a west-facing side without closing the space off completely. Most jobs mix two types – insect on the side that catches the most bugs at dusk, solar on the side that takes the afternoon sun.
Installation starts with the pergola frame – posts set and anchored, louvre motor and drainage run through the posts – then the screen tracks go in along the same posts and beams before the final weatherproofing. Screens and louvres share one remote and one low-voltage wiring run, so one button closes the roof and drops the screens in sequence, and a second button reverses it. That's usually the first thing people ask about before they ask about mesh colour.
What it solves

Keep the bugs out without building walls
Mosquitoes and flies show up right when the louvres open for a summer evening. Insect mesh screens close off the sides without blocking airflow, so you keep the breeze and lose the bugs. They retract fully during the day, so the structure still reads as an open pergola, not a screened-in box.

Add privacy without fencing in the yard
On a narrow lot or a yard that backs onto a neighbour's deck, privacy mesh on one or two sides blocks the sightline without closing off light. It's a tighter weave than insect screen, so it reads almost solid from a few feet away but still lets air move through.

Cut glare and heat on the exposed side
A west-facing patio gets hit with low sun even when the louvres are angled shut. Solar screens drop on that side to cut glare and heat gain without losing the view entirely – they're a mesh, not a wall, so you still see out past them.

Stretch an evening further
Closed louvres plus screens cut wind chill and block dew and bugs, which is the difference between calling it a night at dusk and staying out through a cooler fall evening. It's a buffer against wind and insects, not a heated, sealed room.
What it costs
We put the figure in writing after the free on-site measure – every one of these is sized and priced to the opening.
What moves the number:
- the footprint of the structure – a larger roof needs more louvre panels and a stronger frame
- whether the louvres are motorised with a remote or app control, versus a simpler fixed-pitch design
- integrated features such as lighting, heating, screens or rain sensors added to the structure
- site preparation – a bare patio slab versus a structure that needs new footings or anchoring
- the frame and louvre colour or finish chosen to match the home
- access for the crew and equipment during installation

If what you actually want is full, year-round enclosure rather than a three-season space with screens, a sunroom or four-season addition is a different build – see how the two compare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where we install this
Ontario's shoulder seasons are exactly where a screened pergola earns its keep – dusk bugs in July, a cold snap in September, pollen in May. The screens handle the bugs and wind; the louvres handle rain and sun. We've completed 5 installs in Toronto and 1 install in Newmarket since 2022 that paired the louvered roof with retractable screens on at least one side, mostly for backyard patios and pool decks where privacy from a neighbouring property mattered as much as shade.
