Retractable screens in Richmond Hill

We design, supply and install retractable screens for homes across Richmond Hill, from Oak Ridges lots backing onto the moraine to newer builds in Jefferson and Westbrook with covered loggias. Screens roll down over patios, loggias and garage openings to keep bugs and wind out without blocking the view, and we service everything we install.

Retractable screens in Richmond Hill

A retractable screen is an aluminum frame and roller box that holds a mesh panel, mounted around a patio door, garage opening or loggia so the mesh pulls down a track when you want it and disappears into the housing when you don't. For the full rundown of mesh grades, motor options and finishes, see our retractable screens guide.

In Richmond Hill, most of our work is on newer two-storey homes, so we're usually mounting into brick or stone veneer rather than older wood siding. We measure the opening on site, order the frame and mesh to that exact width and height, and come back to mount the track, box and motor or crank in a single visit. Motorised screens get a line run to a nearby outlet or a low-voltage transformer; manual units just need the bracket and the crank handle.

A lot of the newer construction here has a covered loggia or a walkout basement patio, both of which are straightforward one-visit jobs because the opening is already framed and sheltered from direct weather. Garage door screens are a separate product that mounts to the header above the door and rolls down independently of the garage door itself.

What it solves

Mosquitoes off the Oak Ridges Moraine

Lots in Oak Ridges back onto forest and wetland, so mosquito season starts earlier and runs longer than it does closer to the lake. A solar or standard insect mesh closes the deck or patio opening in minutes and still lets the wind off the open fields move through, instead of trapping heat the way a solid enclosure would.

Covered loggias in Jefferson and Westbrook

Newer builds in Jefferson and Westbrook often come with a covered loggia off the kitchen or great room. Because the opening is already framed and out of direct rain, we can measure, order and mount the screen in a single visit, and the mesh matches the trim colour instead of standing out against it.

Three-car garages used as workshops and gyms

A lot of the larger lots around Elgin Mills and Doncrest have a three-car garage that doubles as a workshop or home gym. A garage door screen mounts to the header above the door and rolls down on its own track, so the space gets airflow and bug protection without leaving the actual garage door open.

Walkout basement patios in Bayview Hill and Mill Pond

Homes with a walkout basement in Bayview Hill and around Mill Pond usually have a second patio opening below the main deck. We screen it the same visit as the upper level when access allows, sharing one measure and install trip instead of two separate call-outs.

Privacy on close-set lots

Where lots sit closer together, a privacy-weave mesh blocks sightlines from a neighbouring yard or second-storey window while still letting air through. It costs more than a basic insect mesh but it's the only mesh grade that actually stops a clear view in from the side.

What it costs

Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $1,400 to $23,500 on real jobs since 2022.

Every project is unique. The final figure depends on the size and number of openings, the options you choose and the site itself, and we put it in writing after a free on-site measure.

What moves the number:

  • the width and height of the opening – a wider or taller span needs a reinforced track and a bigger motor
  • motorised versus hand-crank operation, which changes both the hardware and the labour
  • the mesh grade – a basic insect mesh costs less than a solar-weave or privacy-weave fabric
  • how many openings are screened in one visit – several openings on one property share a single measure and install trip
  • access and height of the install – a second-storey or hard-to-reach opening takes longer to mount safely
  • the frame and housing colour or finish chosen to match the home
  • whether an existing structure needs modification before the screen can be mounted to it

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally no – a retractable screen attaches to an existing opening and doesn't change the structure, so it falls outside the building permit process the city uses for additions or new openings. A few properties with heritage designation near Mill Pond have their own exterior-change review, and we check that before we order anything for a property in that area.

The track and guide system is rated for sustained wind, and the mesh itself is the weak point before the frame is – in a real gust a screen is designed to come part-way out of its track rather than tear or bend the housing. We talk through wind exposure on site before we spec a mesh grade for an open Oak Ridges lot.

Yes – the screen mounts to the header above the garage door opening and operates independently, so you can roll it down with the garage door up for airflow during a workout, then roll the screen up and close the garage door normally the rest of the time.

We measure on site and order the frame and mesh to that exact opening, so lead time depends on what's in production at the time, not just on us. Booking in late winter or early spring gives the best shot at having it mounted before the moraine-side mosquitoes show up in May.

Yes. We've completed 15 installs in Richmond Hill since 2022 and we go back for service calls on all of them – track cleaning, mesh replacement, motor issues, whatever comes up. We don't install anything here we're not prepared to drive back out for.

Where we install this

Richmond Hill's growth in recent years means a lot of our screen work is on newer two-storey construction, not retrofits onto older wood-sided homes. The Oak Ridges Moraine shapes the northern part of the city directly – lots that back onto forest or wetland get more wind and a longer bug season than lots closer to Yonge Street. We've completed 15 installs in Richmond Hill since 2022, mostly on loggias, rear decks and garage openings, and condo boards or heritage-designated properties near Mill Pond are the main place we check for extra approval before ordering.
