A canopy for a pergola is a tensioned fabric roof that slides along tracks fixed to the pergola's beams, opening a solid structure into shade on demand. We fit retractable fabric canopies to existing wood or aluminum pergolas, or build a new aluminum frame with the canopy already engineered in, all installed and serviced locally.

Retractable pergola canopies
A retractable pergola canopy is a length of tensioned fabric that rides inside aluminum tracks fixed along the top or underside of a pergola's beams. Pull it closed and the fabric stretches flat into a true roof; push it open and it concertinas back into a stack at one end, leaving the rafters bare. Most run on a tube motor wired to a wall switch or remote, though a hand-crank version is available for anyone who would rather skip the wiring. Either way the canopy does one job: turning an open-beam structure into a roof on demand, and back again in under a minute.
We fit these two ways. On an existing wood or aluminum pergola, we check the beam spacing and the condition of the structure before we quote, because the tracks need to anchor into something solid, not decorative lattice. If the spacing or the timber will not hold a loaded track, we say so up front and either reinforce the structure or recommend against the retrofit rather than bolt into wood that will not take the load. The other route is a new freestanding aluminum frame built with the canopy engineered into it from the start, which is the simpler install because the tolerances are set to match the fabric system rather than reverse-engineered on site.
Installation itself is measuring the opening, ordering fabric and track to that size, mounting brackets to the beams or posts, running the motor wiring, and testing the canopy open and closed under load before we leave the site.
What it solves

Shade over an existing pergola
If you already have a wood or aluminum pergola and the bare rafters leave the patio too hot or too exposed, we add a retractable fabric canopy to the structure you have rather than replacing it. The track mounts to the beams, the fabric spans between them, and you get a closing roof without tearing out a structure that is otherwise sound.

A new structure with the canopy built in
When there is no pergola yet, we build a freestanding aluminum frame sized for the fabric system from the start. It is the straighter install, because the posts, beams and tracks are specified together, and it avoids the retrofit question of whether an existing structure can actually take the load.

Waterproof fabric, honestly
A fabric billed as waterproof will shed a vertical rain when the pitch and tension are right, but it is not a solid roof. Wind-driven rain, a shallow pitch, or fabric left sagging will find a way through eventually. We size the pitch and tension for the site and tell you plainly when a vertical screen or a solid louvered roof is the better call instead.

When a louvered pergola is the better answer
If you want a structure that stays over the patio through an Ontario winter, sheds snow load, and still opens for sun, a louvered aluminum roof is the honest upgrade from a fabric canopy. Fabric gives a lower cost and a true retract-to-nothing look; louvers give a permanent, load-rated roof. We will tell you which one fits the use before we quote either.

Wind and snow: retract it
A retractable canopy is not a winter roof. We build in wind sensors or a clear instruction to retract past a set wind speed, and the fabric comes down and stays down for the snow season. Leaving it extended under snow or wind load is the fastest way to tear a fabric panel or bend a track, and it is not something a warranty covers.
What it costs
Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $2,900 to $21,900 on real jobs since 2022.
Every project is unique. The final figure depends on the size and number of openings, the options you choose and the site itself, and we put it in writing after a free on-site measure.
What moves the number:
- the projection and width of the canopy – a deeper reach over a larger patio needs a stronger arm or track system
- motorized versus manual hand-crank operation
- whether wind or sun sensors are added
- the fabric grade and pattern selected, since acrylic and solution-dyed fabrics carry different costs
- whether the pergola beams or fascia need reinforcement before a track can be mounted
- access and height of the install on the structure
- the frame colour or finish chosen to match the pergola or home

Frequently Asked Questions

Where we install this
Ontario gives a pergola canopy two very different jobs: shedding sudden summer downpours and standing up to winters that are not kind to anything left extended. We retract every fabric canopy before the snow sets in, and we check municipal setback and permit rules before building a new freestanding frame, since a retrofit track on an existing pergola is usually treated differently than a new structure. We have completed 23 installs in Toronto on this product line since 2022, plus smaller counts across York Region, Simcoe County and Grey County, enough to know which pergolas take a retrofit and which need a new frame instead.
