SunSetter awning alternative in Ontario

Most people typing 'SunSetter awning' into a search bar are not loyal to that brand name specifically – they are looking for a motorized, folding-arm retractable awning that pulls out over a patio or deck for shade and tucks away when it rains or gets windy. That category of product is sold a few different ways: packaged kits ordered online and self-installed, or custom units measured and fitted by a local installer. The search term has become shorthand for the product type more than any one company.

We install folding-arm retractable awnings in both configurations: boxed, where the fabric and arms sit inside an enclosed cassette that protects them when retracted, and open, where the arms and roller bar are exposed, which keeps the cost lower and the look simpler. Either can run manual, with a hand crank, or motorized, with a wall switch or remote, and we can add a wind or sun sensor that retracts the awning automatically in a gust. Every frame we install is aluminum, finished to match your home's trim or siding.

We do not sell a boxed kit sized to the nearest foot. A technician measures your wall, header height, and the clearance you actually have, then we build the awning to those dimensions and bring it back to mount. Mounting means anchoring into the wall framing or fascia – not just the siding – because a loaded awning arm puts real lateral pull on the bracket in wind. If the wall needs reinforcement before it can take that load, we say so before we quote, not after.

What it solves

Reduces UV exposure and glare benefit icon

Shade without losing the whole yard

A retractable awning gives you shade over a dining table or seating area on demand, then opens the sky back up when you want sun or a clear view. That flexibility is the main reason people move away from a fixed canopy or umbrella toward a retractable system.

Protection that gets out of the way of weather

Fabric left extended in heavy wind or snow load can tear or bend the arms. A manual crank or motorized retraction, especially paired with a wind sensor, means the awning is only out when conditions are safe for it.

One-button control

A motorized awning extends and retracts from a wall switch or remote, which matters if the awning is wide, mounted high, or used daily. It also removes the step of fighting a crank handle every time the weather changes.

A frame that matches the house

Because we build to your wall and your colour choice rather than picking from a boxed kit's stock finishes, the awning reads as part of the house rather than an add-on bolted to the siding.

What it costs

Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $2,900 to $21,900 on real jobs since 2022.

Every project is unique. The final figure depends on the size and number of openings, the options you choose and the site itself, and we put it in writing after a free on-site measure.

What moves the number:

  • the projection and width of the awning – a deeper reach over a larger patio needs a stronger arm system
  • motorised versus manual, hand-crank operation
  • whether wind or sun sensors are added
  • the fabric grade and pattern selected, since acrylic and solution-dyed fabrics carry different costs
  • whether the mounting wall or fascia needs reinforcement before the bracket can go up
  • access and height of the install on the building
  • the frame colour or finish chosen to match the home, and whether lighting or heating is built into the housing

Frequently Asked Questions

No. We do not carry that brand name. We design and install our own folding-arm retractable awnings, aluminum frame, measured to your wall rather than sold as a packaged kit. If you already own a SunSetter-branded awning, we are not able to service or repair it, since parts and mounting hardware differ between brands.

A boxed awning encloses the fabric and arms in a cassette when retracted, which protects them from weather and UV when not in use and costs more. An open awning leaves the arms and roller bar exposed when closed, which is simpler and less expensive but offers less protection for the fabric between uses.

Yes. Hand-crank operation is available on both boxed and open styles and costs less than motorized. Motorized is worth it on wider awnings, higher mounting points, or if you want a wind sensor to retract it automatically – a crank cannot do that on its own.

A retractable awning's arms put real load on the wall when extended in wind, so the bracket has to land on solid framing, not just siding. A technician checks your wall construction, header height and clearance in person, because a kit sized by a customer's own tape measure can end up over-engineered, under-sized, or mounted somewhere it shouldn't be.

It's a 5-year warranty in writing, provided at the time of install, covering the frame and operating components we supply and fit. We'll go through exactly what's included and what isn't before you sign anything, so there are no surprises later.

It depends on fabric and frame lead times plus your wall's condition, since reinforcement work adds a step. We'll give you a realistic install date at the quote stage rather than a generic estimate, because it genuinely varies job to job.

Where we install this

Ontario's wind gusts and sudden spring storms are the main reason we push people toward motorized operation with a wind sensor rather than a manual crank left extended by mistake. Wall construction also varies a lot here, from older brick to newer siding over OSB, which is why we check framing before we quote a bracket. We've completed 23 installs in Toronto and 3 installs in Newmarket since 2022, along with jobs across the GTA and surrounding towns, and the wall-reinforcement conversation comes up on a meaningful share of them.
