Mirage retractable screen doors alternative

A retractable screen door is an aluminum mesh panel that rolls out of a slim housing when you want it and disappears back into that housing when you don't. The housing mounts to the top or the latch-side jamb of the opening, the mesh runs along a pair of telescoping side tracks, and a spring-loaded roller or a small motor does the retracting. Pull or press a button, and the screen locks to a bottom bar or handle; release it, and it draws itself back flush with the frame.

We build these for single swing doors, double French doors, in-swing and out-swing openings, and sliding patio doors, including wide multi-panel sliders where two screens meet in the middle. Every unit is measured to the actual opening rather than ordered off a size chart – width, height, the depth of the jamb, and which way the door swings all change how the track and housing get mounted. On install day we fix the housing and side tracks to the frame, run and test the mesh through its full travel, and set the latch or motor stop so it closes flush every time.

Frames and housings are aluminum, available in several finishes to match the door, and the mesh comes in a few grades from a basic insect weave up to solar and privacy weaves. Motorised versions tie into a wall switch or remote; hand-crank versions use a spring mechanism with no wiring at all. Every install carries a 5-year warranty, in writing, regardless of which operation you choose.

What it solves

Reduces UV exposure and glare benefit icon

Single swing doors

A single door gets one housing and one track set, usually on the latch side so the screen clears the swing. This is the simplest and quickest configuration to measure, order and install, and it works on front, side and garden-level entries alike.

Double French doors

Two doors need two screens that meet in the centre, each with its own housing and track, set to close and overlap cleanly. We check both door swings and the centre gap before we order, so the two screens meet without a visible light gap down the middle.

Sliding patio doors

A slider gets a screen that runs horizontally rather than hinging, usually tucked into a side housing by the fixed panel. Wide sliders sometimes need two screens meeting mid-opening instead of one oversized panel, which keeps the mesh tensioned properly.

Multiple openings in one visit

If a property has several doors to screen, we measure and install them all on a single trip, which shares the site visit and labour across openings instead of billing each one separately for travel and setup.

Pet households

Homes with dogs or cats pushing through daily use benefit from a heavier mesh grade and a reinforced bottom bar, which we spec in at the quote stage rather than retrofitting after the first tear.

What it costs

Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $1,400 to $23,500 on real jobs since 2022.

Every project is unique. The final figure depends on the size and number of openings, the options you choose and the site itself, and we put it in writing after a free on-site measure.

What moves the number:

  • the width and height of the opening – a wider or taller span needs a reinforced track and a bigger motor
  • motorised versus hand-crank operation, which changes both the hardware and the labour
  • the mesh grade – a basic insect mesh costs less than a solar-weave or privacy-weave fabric
  • how many openings are screened in one visit – several openings on one property share a single measure and install trip
  • access and height of the install – a second-storey or hard-to-reach opening takes longer to mount safely
  • the frame and housing colour or finish chosen to match the home
  • whether an existing structure needs modification before the screen can be mounted to it

Frequently Asked Questions

People searching mirage screens are usually looking for a retractable screen door – an aluminum mesh panel that rolls into a slim housing beside the door. We design, measure and install that same category of product. We haven't tested the mirage line itself, so we won't make any claim about their specs, pricing or warranty – we can only speak to what we build and stand behind.

Yes. Each door gets its own housing and track, and we check both swings and the centre gap at the measure so the two screens close flush against each other without a visible gap down the middle.

Yes, the screen runs horizontally on a track instead of hinging. Wide sliders sometimes get two screens meeting mid-opening rather than one oversized panel, which keeps the mesh properly tensioned and easier to operate.

A 5-year warranty, in writing, on every retractable screen door we install, whether it's motorised or hand-crank.

It won't hold up to sustained high wind the way a fixed screen or a solid door does, it isn't a security barrier, and a very wide single opening may need to be split into two screens rather than one oversized panel. We'll tell you at the quote stage if your opening falls into any of those categories.

We quote and install our own aluminum screen systems, measured to your opening, rather than fitting a separate off-the-shelf unit. That's what lets us put a 5-year warranty behind the whole job, housing to mesh.

Where we install this

Ontario doorways are rarely a standard size, and older homes in particular often have openings that are out of square by the time you measure jamb to jamb, which is why we measure every opening on site rather than quoting off a stock size. Winter is also a factor – mesh and track hardware left exposed to freeze-thaw cycles need a housing that sheds water rather than trapping it, which is a design detail worth asking about regardless of who installs it. We've completed 30 installs in Toronto since 2022, along with smaller volumes across Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Newmarket, so the measure-to-install process here is well worn.
