Retractable screen cost in Ontario

Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $1,400 to $23,500 on real jobs since 2022. Where you fall in that range depends on opening size, motorized versus manual operation, mesh grade, and how many openings we screen in one visit.

Retractable screen cost in Ontario

A retractable screen is an aluminum frame and guide-rail system with a mesh panel that rolls up into a slim housing when it's not needed and pulls down to close off an opening when it is. The housing mounts at the top of the opening, the guide rails run down each side, and the mesh glides in the rails so it stays taut in wind rather than flapping loose. Depending on the opening, the screen can run horizontally across a porch or patio, vertically to drop in front of a garage door, or at an angle to close off a pergola or balcony rail. Operation is either hand-crank, where you pull a strap or turn a crank to lower and raise the mesh, or motorized, where a small motor inside the housing does it on a wall switch, remote, or app.

We start every job with an on-site measure, because no two openings are identical – framing is rarely perfectly square, and the housing and rails have to be built to the real dimensions, not the ones on a floor plan. From that measure we order custom-fabricated components sized to the opening, in aluminum, finished in the frame colour that matches the home. Install is a half-day to a full day on-site depending on how many openings and how much structural prep is needed. Every install comes with a 5-year warranty, in writing, covering the hardware and workmanship.

What it solves

Reduces UV exposure and glare benefit icon

Screening a porch without boxing it in

A covered porch with open sides is where most of our retractable screen jobs start. The screen closes off the opening against insects and the worst of the afternoon sun while the mesh stays sheer enough that the view and the breeze aren't lost. Raised, the porch looks completely open again – there's no fixed screen door or permanent mesh panel sitting in the frame year-round.

Closing a garage door opening for living space

Garage openings get screened when the garage is being used as extra living or hobby space in warm weather. The span is wider and taller than a patio door, so the track is reinforced and the motor is sized up accordingly – it's a bigger job than a single window screen, and the price reflects that, not the product itself.

Shading and screening a balcony

Balconies and rooftop openings often combine a sun and a bug problem in one space with limited square footage. A retractable screen mounted to the rail or the overhead structure closes that gap without adding a permanent rail-to-ceiling enclosure, which condo and HOA rules often won't allow anyway.

Keeping a pool patio bug-free

Openings next to a pool get screened on two or more sides so the whole patio becomes one enclosed space rather than a single doorway. Doing several openings on one property in the same visit is one of the bigger cost factors – it shares the measure and install trip across all of them.

Tying screens into home automation

Motorized screens on a wall switch, remote, or app close the loop with other motorized shading on the property, so a homeowner isn't manually cranking down three or four different screens when the sun comes around. It adds hardware and a bit of labour over hand-crank, but it's the piece most people say they'd choose again.

Built for Ontario weather, year round

These are not the thin screens that flap, jump their track and get rolled up at the first breeze. Our retractable screens run in magnetic side rails on an aluminum frame, and the numbers below are what set them apart.

30 ft × 20 ftLargest single screen

One screen covers an opening up to 30 feet wide and 20 feet tall, so a full-width patio or a two-storey porch gets one clean panel instead of two or three joined together.

120 km/hDesign wind speed, screen down

Independently evaluated to a 120 km/h (75 mph) design wind speed with the screen fully lowered. That is the kind of wind that strips leaves off trees; the screen stays put and keeps doing its job.

Magnetic railsSelf-correcting side tracks

Rare-earth magnets in each rail pull the mesh edge back into line after a gust or a knock. There is no zipper to jam and no fabric to re-thread, which is the service call most other screens eventually need.

750 lbHolding force across the rails

The magnets hold the mesh with roughly 750 pounds of pull across the pair of rails. A spring-tensioned track manages a few pounds, which is why those screens bow and flap.

Hurricane gradeStorm-rated option for exposed sites

For lakefront, ridge-top and high-rise openings we offer a hurricane-grade version of the same magnetic-rail system, engineered for winds above 250 km/h.

4 seasonsUse the space all year

Insect mesh for summer, solar mesh for heat and glare, privacy weave, or clear vinyl panels that turn a covered patio into a wind-free room you can heat and use through fall and winter. It is the cheapest square footage you will ever add to the house.

Obstacle sensingMotors that stop when they should

The motor senses an obstruction and stops before anything is damaged. Run up to 32 screens and 10 schedules from one app, a wall switch or a hand-held remote, with smart-home control if you want it.

Wildlife outA weighted, locked bottom bar

The heaviest weighted bottom bar in its class, with retention locks at both ends and a keder-locked fabric edge, keeps mosquitoes, wasps, birds, leaves and the neighbourhood wildlife on the right side of the mesh.

5-year warrantyIn writing, from our own crew

Measured, installed and serviced by ROLLerUP's own installers, with a 5-year warranty in writing and a showroom in Newmarket where you can see the screens work.

Size, wind and holding-force figures are the track system's published technical data and independent evaluation; the wind figure applies to the evaluated screen size, and we confirm the rating for your opening at the free on-site measure.

What it costs

Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $1,400 to $23,500 on real jobs since 2022.

Every project is unique. The final figure depends on the size and number of openings, the options you choose and the site itself, and we put it in writing after a free on-site measure.

What moves the number:

  • The width and height of the opening – a wider or taller span needs a reinforced track and a bigger motor.
  • Motorized versus hand-crank operation, which changes both the hardware and the labour.
  • The mesh grade – a basic insect mesh costs less than a solar-weave or privacy-weave fabric.
  • How many openings are screened in one visit – several openings on one property share a single measure and install trip.
  • Access and height of the install – a second-storey or hard-to-reach opening takes longer to mount safely.
  • The frame and housing colour or finish chosen to match the home.
  • Whether an existing structure needs modification before the screen can be mounted to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $1,400 to $23,500 on real jobs since 2022. The number moves with the size of the opening, motorized versus manual operation, the mesh grade, how many openings are done in one visit, access and height, finish colour, and whether the structure needs any modification first.

Yes. Motorized operation adds a motor, wiring or a battery pack, and a switch or remote, plus the labour to install and set them up. It moves you toward the upper part of the price range, but it's the feature most homeowners tell us they're glad they added once it's in.

We price per opening, because the opening – its width, height, and what has to be reinforced to support it – drives the cost more directly than square footage alone. A tall narrow opening and a short wide one of similar area can land in different places on the range.

No. A garage opening is wider and taller than most patio doors, so it needs a reinforced track and a larger motor to handle the span. A single small window screen and a wide garage opening are not the same job, and the price reflects the hardware and labour each one actually needs.

The on-site measure, custom fabrication of the frame, rails and mesh to fit the opening, the install itself, and a 5-year warranty in writing covering hardware and workmanship. There's no separate charge for the measure visit or for the warranty paperwork.

Usually, yes. Several openings on the same property share one measure visit and one install trip, which spreads the fixed part of the job cost across more units. It's one of the bigger levers on where a job lands in the range.

Where we install this

Ontario's weather puts real demands on an exterior screen system – hot, humid summers push homeowners to screen out bugs and glare for most of the warm season, while winter freeze-thaw cycles mean the aluminum housing, rails and hardware have to handle moisture and temperature swings without the track binding or the mesh sagging. Condo and HOA rules in many municipalities also restrict permanent enclosures, which is part of why a retractable, non-permanent screen is often the option that gets approved where a fixed addition wouldn't be. We've completed 30 installs in Toronto and 15 in Richmond Hill since 2022, alongside smaller numbers of jobs across the rest of the GTA.
