If you searched for a phantom screen company, you are almost certainly after a retractable screen: mesh that rolls out of a slim aluminum housing when you want it and disappears when you don't. That is what we install across Ontario on doors, windows, patios and porches, measured and quoted in writing first.

Phantom screens alternative in Ontario
A retractable screen is mesh on a roller inside an aluminum housing, running in two aluminum side tracks. Pull it down or press a button and the opening is screened; let it go back up and the mesh sits hidden in the housing, so your view and your doorway go back to normal. "Phantom screens" is the phrase most people type when they want that behaviour, the same way people say thermos or dumpster. We are Shading Solutions by ROLLerUP, part of ROLLerUP, and we design, install and service that product category across Ontario. We do not make it and we do not sell it over a counter: we measure your opening, specify the system, fit it and come back if it needs service.
Every system we fit is aluminum: housing, tracks, bottom bar and brackets, finished in white, beige, brown, silver, black or black-brown so it reads as part of the house rather than an add-on. Mesh is chosen by job. Insect mesh for a back door you walk through daily, solar weave for a west-facing patio where glare is the real problem, privacy weave where neighbours sit close.
Installation starts with a site measure, because openings are rarely square and the track has to sit plumb against something solid. We fasten into framing, masonry or a reinforced sub-frame, hide the cabling on motorised units where we can, and test the unit with you before we leave. Motorised systems are wired by a licensed electrician when a new circuit is needed.
What it solves

A door you can leave open
The common one. A patio slider or a garden door that you want open on summer evenings without mosquitoes coming in with the air. A retractable screen covers the full opening while it is down, latches at the bottom bar, and rolls clear of the frame when you want the clean doorway back. Nothing swings, nothing stores in the garage.

Glare and heat on a west-facing patio
An insect mesh does nothing about late sun. A solar weave on the outside of the glass stops a large share of the heat before it reaches the door, so the room behind stays usable in the afternoon. You still see out through it. We will tell you at the measure which weave suits your orientation rather than guessing from a brochure.

Porches, pergolas and covered patios
Open-sided outdoor rooms are the hardest spaces to use in Ontario because bugs arrive the moment the sun drops. Screens between columns or posts close the sides when you want them closed and vanish when you want the view. We fit them to existing structures regularly, and we say so plainly when the structure needs reinforcing first.

Windows you want to open without a fixed screen
Casement and fixed windows often end up with a permanent screen that dulls the glass year round. A retractable unit above the opening gives you mesh only when the window is open, and a clear pane the rest of the time. It also keeps the mesh out of winter weather, which is the main reason screens tear.
Built for Ontario weather, year round
These are not the thin screens that flap, jump their track and get rolled up at the first breeze. Our retractable screens run in magnetic side rails on an aluminum frame, and the numbers below are what set them apart.
One screen covers an opening up to 30 feet wide and 20 feet tall, so a full-width patio or a two-storey porch gets one clean panel instead of two or three joined together.
Independently evaluated to a 120 km/h (75 mph) design wind speed with the screen fully lowered. That is the kind of wind that strips leaves off trees; the screen stays put and keeps doing its job.
Rare-earth magnets in each rail pull the mesh edge back into line after a gust or a knock. There is no zipper to jam and no fabric to re-thread, which is the service call most other screens eventually need.
The magnets hold the mesh with roughly 750 pounds of pull across the pair of rails. A spring-tensioned track manages a few pounds, which is why those screens bow and flap.
For lakefront, ridge-top and high-rise openings we offer a hurricane-grade version of the same magnetic-rail system, engineered for winds above 250 km/h.
Insect mesh for summer, solar mesh for heat and glare, privacy weave, or clear vinyl panels that turn a covered patio into a wind-free room you can heat and use through fall and winter. It is the cheapest square footage you will ever add to the house.
The motor senses an obstruction and stops before anything is damaged. Run up to 32 screens and 10 schedules from one app, a wall switch or a hand-held remote, with smart-home control if you want it.
The heaviest weighted bottom bar in its class, with retention locks at both ends and a keder-locked fabric edge, keeps mosquitoes, wasps, birds, leaves and the neighbourhood wildlife on the right side of the mesh.
Measured, installed and serviced by ROLLerUP's own installers, with a 5-year warranty in writing and a showroom in Newmarket where you can see the screens work.
Size, wind and holding-force figures are the track system's published technical data and independent evaluation; the wind figure applies to the evaluated screen size, and we confirm the rating for your opening at the free on-site measure.
What it costs
Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $1,400 to $23,500 on real jobs since 2022.
Every project is unique. The final figure depends on the size and number of openings, the options you choose and the site itself, and we put it in writing after a free on-site measure.
What moves the number:
- The width and height of the opening: a wider or taller span needs a reinforced track and a bigger motor.
- Motorised versus hand-crank operation, which changes both the hardware and the labour.
- Mesh grade: a basic insect mesh costs less than a solar-weave or privacy-weave fabric.
- How many openings are screened in one visit, since several openings on one property share a single measure and install trip.
- Access and height of the install, because a second-storey or hard-to-reach opening takes longer to mount safely.
- The frame and housing colour or finish chosen to match the home.
- Whether an existing structure needs modification before the screen can be mounted to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where we install this
Ontario gives you roughly five months where an open door is a pleasure and the rest of the year where it is not, which is why a screen that rolls away matters here more than it would in a mild climate. Mesh left out through freeze-thaw and road salt ages fast. Retractable units spend winter in their housing. Most of our screen work is in and around the GTA and York Region, including 30 installs in Toronto since 2022, where deep lots, west-facing patios and tight semi-detached side yards all push toward the same answer: screen the opening when you need it, and get your view back when you don't.
