Fixed awnings for patios, doors and storefronts

A fixed awning is a permanent shade structure: a welded aluminum frame, exterior-rated fabric stretched over it, bolted to the building and left up year-round. We design, install and service them for entrances, windows, storefronts and small patios across Ontario, and we tell you when a retractable awning is the better call.

Fixed awnings for patios, doors and storefronts

A fixed awning is a stationary shade structure. The frame is welded aluminum, cut and squared to your opening, and an exterior-rated fabric is stretched over it and locked into a channel so it stays drum-tight. There is no motor, no arm mechanism and nothing to operate: it goes up once and stays there through every season until the fabric is replaced. That simplicity is the whole appeal. Fewer moving parts means fewer things to break, and the shape can follow the building rather than the other way round, so you can do a shallow eyebrow over a window, a long slope over a storefront, or a flat-panel canopy over a side door.

We start on site with measurements of the opening, the wall construction and the height you want the leading edge to sit at, because headroom over a door is a code and comfort question before it is a design one. We check what is behind the cladding: brick, block, wood framing or a fascia board that will not hold a bracket on its own. Where the substrate is weak, we reinforce or move the fixing points before anything is mounted. Frames are through-bolted or anchored into solid backing, flashed or sealed where water could track behind the wall, and set with enough pitch that rain runs off instead of pooling. Most residential canopies go up in a day. We come back to service them, re-tension fabric and replace covers when they age out, and the install is covered by our 5-year warranty, in writing.

What it solves

Reduces UV exposure and glare benefit icon

Keeping rain and snow off an entrance

A door canopy is the most practical awning we install. It gives you somewhere dry to stand while you find keys, keeps snow off the threshold, and stops the wet-and-freeze cycle that wrecks door sills and hardware. Because a fixed awning never retracts, it is doing that job in February when a folding-arm system would be rolled away.

Cutting heat gain on west and south windows

Shade works best outside the glass, before the sun ever reaches it. A fixed awning sized to the window's height and the summer sun angle shades the glass through the hottest part of the day and keeps the room behind it noticeably cooler. It also protects floors, art and furniture from the fading that direct afternoon sun causes.

Giving a storefront presence

On a commercial frontage a fixed awning does two jobs: it shades the display window and the people standing at it, and it carries your identity. Fabric can be ordered in your colour, and graphics can be applied to the valance or the slope, so the canopy reads as signage from down the street without needing a separate sign permit in many cases.

Covering a small patio or side yard

For a compact patio, a bistro table or a barbecue alcove, a fixed canopy is often the cleaner answer than a mechanism. It holds its shape in gusts that would send a retractable awning in, it needs no power, and it is always there when a quick rain starts. For larger decks we usually steer you to a retractable system instead.

Nothing has to be remembered. There is no arm to retract before a storm, no sensor to replace, no owner-training for tenants. The annual routine is a rinse with mild soap and water, a look at the fixings, and a check that the fabric is still tight in its channel. We handle that on a service visit if you would rather not go up a ladder.

What it costs

Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $2,900 to $21,900 on real jobs since 2022.

Every project is unique. The final figure depends on the size and number of openings, the options you choose and the site itself, and we put it in writing after a free on-site measure.

What moves the number:

  • Projection and width: a deeper reach over a larger patio needs a stronger frame and more fixing points.
  • Whether the awning is a stationary frame or an operating system with a motor and wind or sun sensors.
  • The fabric grade and pattern chosen, since acrylic and solution-dyed fabrics carry different costs.
  • Whether the mounting wall or fascia needs reinforcement before a bracket can be installed.
  • Access and height of the install on the building, which decides lift and crew size.
  • The frame colour or finish selected to match the house or storefront.
  • Whether lighting or heating is integrated into the awning housing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and that is the point of one, but it has to be designed for the load. A fixed awning carries snow, ice and wind every day of the year, so the frame, the pitch and the fixings are sized for that from the start. We will not install a shallow decorative frame over a wide opening and call it winter-ready. If the structure behind it cannot take the load, we say so.

It blocks sun you may want. In October and March the sun is low and warm, and a permanent canopy keeps that light off your deck and out of the windows behind it. You also cannot open the sky for a clear evening. In exchange you get a quieter, simpler structure with no mechanism, and shelter that is there in rain and snow.

The aluminum frame is finished in a range of standard and custom colours, so it can match window frames, trim or a storefront palette. Fabrics come in solids, stripes and patterns in exterior grades built to hold colour against UV. Fire-rated fabrics are available for commercial work. On storefronts we can apply graphics to the slope or valance in your own colours.

The frame outlives the cover. Aluminum does not rust, and a powder-coated frame keeps its finish for a long time. Fabric is the wear item: it fades, loses tension and eventually goes brittle at the stitching. We re-tension covers on service visits and replace them when they are done, which is far cheaper than a new frame. Our installation carries a 5-year warranty, in writing.

For a small residential door or window canopy, usually not, but it depends on your municipality, the projection, and whether the awning oversails a walkway or public right of way. Commercial frontages in a downtown district often need sign or encroachment approval. We tell you what we know for your address and we will not start a job that needs an approval you do not have.

Often, but it needs the owner's and sometimes the municipality's agreement, because a fixed awning is through-bolted into the facade. On heritage frontages we look at where fixings can land without hitting original masonry, and sometimes the honest answer is that the building will not take one. We would rather tell you that on the first visit.

Where we install this

Ontario makes this decision for you more than style does. A canopy here has to shed heavy wet snow in January, take ice loading off a roof edge, and then handle a July thunderstorm gust the same year, so pitch, frame section and the strength of the wall behind it matter more than the fabric pattern. Older brick homes across York Region and Toronto often have soft mortar that needs fixings relocated into solid backing. Commercial strips with sidewalk clearance rules set the minimum height of the leading edge. Our showroom is at 1151 Gorham St, Unit 8 in Newmarket, Monday to Friday, and we measure every opening on site before quoting.
