Retractable awning cost in Ontario

Supplied and installed, a single awning has ranged from $2,900 to $21,900 on real jobs since 2022. That range comes from 43 awning jobs we have actually invoiced, not from a catalogue. Width and projection move it most, then motorisation, fabric grade, whether the mounting wall needs reinforcing, and how awkward the height and access are on the day.

Retractable awning cost in Ontario

A retractable awning is a folding-arm shade system that fixes to the house and pushes a fabric roof out over a deck, patio or storefront, then folds flat against the wall when you want the sun back. Everything structural is aluminum: the wall brackets, the front bar, the arms and the roller tube the fabric winds onto. Nothing lands on the deck, so there are no posts to work around and no footings to dig, and the whole system disappears when it is retracted. There are two builds. An open awning leaves the rolled fabric visible under a hood; it is lighter, costs less and is a sensible choice tucked under an existing soffit or overhang. A boxed (cassette) awning seals the fabric and the arms inside an aluminum housing when it closes, keeping grit, leaves and weather off the mechanism, and that is what we put on an exposed wall. Sizes run from 6 feet wide up to 22 feet 11 inches, with projection out to 19 feet 8 inches. The install is the part the price really pays for. We measure the opening, work out where the sun actually lands at the hours you use the space, then find out what is behind the cladding: brick veneer, stucco over foam, siding over a band joist. Brackets have to reach real structure, not the skin, and if the fascia or wall needs reinforcing first, that carpentry is part of the job. We set the pitch so water sheds off the front bar, have a motor wired by a licensed electrician when it is not plug-in, set the open and close limits, and run it with you before we leave. We design the system to your opening, install it and service it afterwards; the systems are Made in Canada.

What it solves

Reduces UV exposure and glare benefit icon

Afternoon sun on a west-facing deck

West and south-facing decks go unusable from mid-afternoon onward, and a patio umbrella only covers the chair it is standing beside. A folding-arm awning projects out over the whole seating area, so the shade lands on the table rather than on the wall of the house. Because it retracts, you are not giving up the morning light or the spring sun you actually want: you pull it out for the few hours that matter and put it away again.

Heat coming through patio doors

Glass is where most of the heat gets into a room. Shading the door from outside stops solar gain before it reaches the glass, which takes load off the air conditioner in the rooms behind it. We cannot promise a figure on your hydro bill and we will not quote one, but the difference in a sun-facing living room on a July afternoon is easy to feel, and it is the reason a lot of our awning calls start indoors.

A patio you can still sit under in light rain

With the pitch set properly at install, a retractable awning sheds a light shower off the front bar and buys you the rest of dinner outside instead of carrying plates in. It is not a roof, and we say that in the private lane before we quote. Steady rain, water pooling in the fabric, or anything beyond a light breeze and the awning should come in: the arms are engineered to carry fabric, not weight.

Shade without posts or footings

Nothing touches the deck surface, so you keep the floor plan and the furniture layout you already have, and nobody digs. For most Ontario homes an awning fixed to the house is treated as an attachment rather than a structure, which is simpler than erecting a roofed one, but condo corporations and subdivision design rules still have a say. Check before you choose a colour, and we will tell you what we have run into locally.

Storefront and café seating

A retractable awning over sidewalk or terrace seating gives customers shade at lunch and folds away when the patio closes for the night. Commercial jobs usually mean wider spans, higher mounting and sometimes fire-rated fabric, all of which push a quote up the range. Street-facing installs also come with projection and clearance bylaws over a public sidewalk, so we check the height and the reach before we put numbers on paper.

A shade roof you can take away in winter

A fixed roof is over the patio in February whether you want it there or not. It shades the room behind it all winter, holds snow and needs clearing. An awning rolls in. That matters on small lots where the one bright room in the house is the one behind the patio door, and it means the fabric spends the off-season rolled away out of the weather rather than sitting in it and fading.

What it costs

Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $2,900 to $21,900 on real jobs since 2022.

Every project is unique. The final figure depends on the size and number of openings, the options you choose and the site itself, and we put it in writing after a free on-site measure.

What moves the number:

  • Projection and width set the base: a deeper reach over a larger patio needs a stronger arm system and a heavier roller tube to carry it.
  • Motorised operation costs more than a hand crank, and adding wind and sun sensors on top of the motor adds a little more again.
  • Fabric grade and pattern move the number, because acrylic and solution-dyed cloths sit at different price points for the same size.
  • If the mounting wall or fascia has to be reinforced before the brackets go on, that carpentry is part of the job and part of the price.
  • Access and mounting height matter: a high wall over a sloped yard means more lift, more labour and sometimes equipment on site.
  • The frame colour or finish you pick to match the house can shift the cost, since some finishes are stock and some are not.
  • Lighting or heating integrated into the awning housing adds hardware and wiring and pushes a quote toward the upper end.

If you are torn between fabric overhead and a fixed aluminum roof with rotating blades, the decision is really retractability versus year-round coverage, and the budgets are not the same. We lay both out side by side, including where each one fails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because the online price is a box on a pallet. It does not include someone on a ladder finding the band joist behind your siding, reinforcement if the fascia cannot carry the load, the pitch, the electrical connection, or anyone to come back when a limit drifts out of adjustment. Lighter kits also use thinner arm sets and lower fabric grades, which show up as sag and fade after a couple of seasons. The awning is cheaper; the awning on the house is not.

For anything wide or mounted high, yes. A crank works fine, but if an awning is awkward to open people stop opening it, and an awning that stays rolled up is money spent on nothing. A motor also makes a wind sensor possible, which retracts the fabric when gusts pick up and you are not home. The motor is one of the larger single items in a quote, which is why it appears in the factors above.

Usually not for an awning attached to a house, but we do not guess on your behalf. Condo corporations, subdivision design guidelines and heritage districts all have their own rules, and commercial installs over a public sidewalk have clearance and projection requirements that do get enforced. Ask your municipality before you choose a colour. We will give you the projection and mounting height we propose so you are asking with real figures rather than a guess.

No, and that is the honest limit of the product. Fabric and folding arms handle sun and a light shower; they do not handle gusts, driving rain, or water pooling in the middle of the fabric. Leaving an awning out in a storm is the most common way we see one damaged. A wind sensor retracts it automatically when you are at work or away for the weekend, which protects the system, but it is a safety net rather than permission to leave it out.

The site visit and measure, the design to your opening, the awning and its aluminum frame, all mounting hardware, any reinforcement we find is needed, the installation, limit setting, a walkthrough on the remote, and a 5-year warranty, in writing. Electrical connection by a licensed electrician is included when the run is straightforward; a long, buried or panel-side run is priced separately, and you hear about it before the job rather than after.

We will not mount an awning on a wall we do not trust, including crumbling mortar, rotten fascia, or foam cladding with nothing solid behind it, until it is repaired. We will not undersize a frame to hit someone's number either. And on a very exposed, windy lot we will sometimes say the awning is the wrong product and point you at a fixed aluminum roof instead, even though it is the larger sale for us.

Where we install this

Ontario gives an awning a short, hard season. Our summers deliver exactly the sun you are buying shade from, and our winters mean the fabric comes in: you retract it in the fall and leave it rolled away rather than letting wet snow load the arms. Wind is the other local fact, since gusts across open subdivisions and lake shores are what wreck awnings, and it is why we keep raising sensors. Most houses here are brick veneer or stucco over foam, so what the brackets anchor into is a real conversation, not a formality. Since 2022 we have done 23 installs in Toronto and 3 installs in Newmarket on this product line.
