Retractable screens in Newmarket

A retractable screen is a fabric mesh on a roller inside a slim aluminum cassette, running in two aluminum side tracks. You drop it when you want bugs out, glare down or the deck made private, and it rolls back out of sight when you do not. Motorised screens run on a wall switch or remote; hand-crank screens use a gear and a detachable handle. If you want the full product rundown – mesh openness, frame colours, interior versus exterior mount – read the main guide at /retractable-screens/. This page is about what changes when the opening is in Newmarket.

Our showroom at 1151 Gorham St, Unit 8 is the short version of the sales process. You come in, you lower a screen yourself, you hold the solar weave against the window and see how much of the yard is still visible, and you look at the frame finishes under real light rather than on a monitor. We are open Monday to Friday, 9:00-17:00. Most Newmarket customers come in once before they commit and never need to again.

Installs run the same way every time. We measure the opening ourselves, out of square included, because a screen track that is plumb on one side and not the other will bind within a season. We confirm the mount surface – brick, stone veneer, wood post, stucco over foam – and fix the brackets into something structural, not into cladding. Motorised units get wired to a dedicated point, and we will tell you before the job if that means an electrician. Everything we install carries a 5-year warranty, in writing.

What it solves

Reduces UV exposure and glare benefit icon

Backing onto a golf course or open space

Stonehaven and Glenway back onto fairways and green corridors. That is the view you paid for, and it is also open grass that puts mosquitoes and midges on your deck every evening from late spring. A solar or insect weave keeps the bugs off without walling the yard in – from the inside you still read the tree line, and from the fairway side nobody is watching you eat dinner.

Blocks heat feature icon for retractable screens

West-facing decks that cook after four

Summerhill and Woodland Hill have a lot of newer two-storey homes on tight lots with the main deck facing west. From mid-afternoon it is unusable in July. A solar-weave screen on the open side cuts the direct sun and the glare off the neighbour's windows while you keep the view, and it rolls up when the heat is gone instead of being a permanent fixture on your facade.

Privacy between close lots

Copper Hills and the newer Woodland Hill streets put houses close enough that a deck conversation carries. A privacy weave on the side you care about gives you a soft visual break at a fraction of what a built screen wall costs, and unlike a fence it is not a permanent structure, so it does not change your yard when it is up out of the way.

Keeping the porch usable in shoulder season

An older covered porch around Historic Main Street works in May and October if the wind is off it. Screens in the open bays take the edge off the breeze and keep the leaves and blackflies out, which usually buys you a few extra weeks at each end of the season. They are not a weatherproof room – nothing retractable is – but they change how often you use the space.

What it costs

Supplied and installed, a single screen has ranged from $1,400 to $23,500 on real jobs since 2022.

Every project is unique. The final figure depends on the size and number of openings, the options you choose and the site itself, and we put it in writing after a free on-site measure.

What moves the number:

  • The width and height of the opening – a wider or taller span needs a reinforced track and a bigger motor.
  • Motorised versus hand-crank operation, which changes both the hardware and the labour.
  • The mesh grade – a basic insect mesh costs less than a solar-weave or privacy-weave fabric.
  • How many openings are screened in one visit, since several openings on one property share a single measure and install trip.
  • Access and height of the install – a second-storey or hard-to-reach opening takes longer to mount safely.
  • The frame and housing colour or finish chosen to match the home.
  • Whether an existing structure needs modification before the screen can be mounted to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a screen added to an existing wall, porch or pergola, we have not needed a building permit – nothing structural changes. Building a new structure to hang screens from is a different matter and is handled by the Town. If your home sits in or near a heritage area around Historic Main Street, exterior changes can need extra approval, so we ask about that at the measure rather than after.

Open-backing lots in Stonehaven and Glenway get real gusts off the fairways. We spec track depth and fabric for the exposure, and the magnetic side rails hold the mesh in place when the wind picks up. Honest limit: any retractable screen is a fabric panel, and in a strong storm the right move is to have it up. We will not pretend otherwise to close a sale.

Newmarket is our shortest run – the showroom is on Gorham Street, so a service call here does not need a half-day of driving budgeted into it. Most issues are a worn bottom-bar seal, a motor limit that has drifted, or debris in the track. We carry common parts in the van, and anything covered sits under the 5-year warranty, in writing.

Spring is our busiest stretch because everyone decides in the first warm week. If you book in late winter you get the measure and the install done before bug season instead of during it. Fall is also a good window – the fabric and hardware are unaffected by the cold, and we can mount in shoulder weather without issue. We do not install in heavy rain or ice.

Yes, and we would rather you did. Come to 1151 Gorham St, Unit 8, Monday to Friday, 9:00-17:00, lower a screen, look through the mesh at different openness levels and hold the frame finishes against a sample. Ten minutes in the showroom settles questions that a phone call cannot. Call (289) 270-5747 first if you want someone specific on hand.

We will not mount tracks into stucco over foam, loose brick veneer or a rotted porch post, because the screen will pull itself off the wall. We will not run a single span so wide that the fabric sags – we split it into two screens instead. And we will not screen an opening where the only fixing point belongs to a structure we judge unsafe until it is repaired.

Where we install this

Newmarket housing splits into two jobs for us. Older homes near Historic Main Street have covered porches with real posts and bays, which makes for clean column-to-column mounting but means we check for rot and for heritage rules before we quote. The newer subdivisions – Summerhill, Woodland Hill, Copper Hills – are two-storey builds on tight lots, often with stucco or thin veneer where we have to find the structure behind the cladding. Stonehaven and Glenway back onto golf course and open green space, which gives both the best views and the worst evening bug pressure in town. Being based here is the practical advantage: short drives, quick service calls, and a showroom you can walk into.
